OPW Minister gives green light to Templemore flood relief project.

A contractor to undertake the project has been secured and the funding put in place for the 10.2 million euro scheme.

The works have been dogged by setbacks since they were first formally proposed by the OPW in 2006 and in the intervening years both businesses and residents in the Mid Tipp town have been hit by several severe flooding incidents.

Tipperary Independent TD Michael Lowry is confident this project will put an end to that adding a tender has been accepted and construction will get underway in June.

OPW Minister Sean Canning travels to Templemore this afternoon to officially unveil the scheme which will consist of:

*A 70m-long inlet channel starting in the Mall River just downstream of Abbey Cottage.

*A new outflow from the lake to run under Blackcastle Road to the inlet channel.

*A defence line north of the town with Debris and Gravel Traps.

*River relocation consisting of a channel diversion by constructing a new 750m long channel ( that begins in Short’s field and finishes 230m downstream of Small’s Bridge.

Deputy Lowry says over 100 residential properties and businesses will be protected by the scheme while the construction phase will provide a much needed local economic boost for Templemore
