Today's event to honour poet, patriot and educator Thomas MacDonagh comes almost a hundred years to the day after his execution on May 3rd 1916 for his role in the insurgency.

He was just 38 years of age leaving behind a young wife Muriel and two children Donagh and Barbara.

As part of the 1916-2016 centenary commemorations – sculptor Mark Rode was commissioned to sculpt a bronze statue of MacDonagh who was one of the signatory of the Proclamation.

It will be unveiled at today's official commemoration which kicks off with a parade through the village from 2pm with those attending being urged to dress if possible in period costumes from the 1916 era.

Traffic restrictions will also be in place with no parking available on Main Street – residents are urged to park elsewhere while traffic via the Nenagh Road must park in the GAA grounds.

Diversions will be signposted today and those attending the commemorations are being urged to obey the stewards.
