No major financial saving from closing Garda stations

The Justice Minister has confirmed the State saves €4,000 annually from the closure of each Garda station.

Five Garda stations in the Premier County have been closed since January 2013 raising serious concerns among the rural communities.

The stations concerned were in Grangemockler, New Inn, Terryglass, Dundrum and Rearcross.

The closure of these stations in Tipperary is seen as a major factor in the increase in burglaries and break-ins across the county.

Minister Frances Fitzgerald says the total annual savings from closing 139 Garda stations are just over €550,000 with the Tipperary ones giving a saving of €20,000.

But she's insisted that the closure of Garda stations wasn't designed as a cost-saving measure – but rather to free up Gardaí for frontline work elsewhere.

The news comes as the latest figures from the CSO show a slight increase in crime – with a 1.2 per cent increase in offences in the last year.

The details came in response to a written Dáil question from Sinn Féin's justice spokesman Padraig MacLochlainn.
