Nine days of mourning for Fidel Castro underway

The former President has been cremated – his ashes will be brought across the country this week before being interred in Santiago next Sunday.

President Michael D Higgins has been criticised here for labeling Castro as a giant among global leaders, while US President-elect Donald Trump has described him as a “brutal dictator”.

Cuban-Americans have also been celebrating the death of Mr Castro – many of them, and their parents, left the Caribbean island in the years following the revolution in 1959.
