New Bishop of Waterford and Lismore announced

Father Alphonsus Cullinan will take over the role from Dr William Lee who stepped down in 2013.

The Diocese of Waterford & Lismore takes in large sections of South Tipperary including Clonmel, Carrick , Cahir, Ardfinnan and Clogheen.

The diocese has been under an administrator since the retirement of Dr William Lee in October 2013 due to ill health.

Monsignor Nicholas O'Mahony took over the duties of Dr Lee until a new Bishop could be appointed by the Vatican.

This morning, Father Alphonsus Cullinan was named as the Bishop-elect by Pope Francis.

The Clare native was ordained in 1995 and has served mostly in the Diocese of Limerick…He was appointed the Parish Priest of Rathkeale in 2011.

He holds a teaching degree from Mary Immaculate College, along with a doctorate in moral theology in from Rome.

There are 45 parishes, 85 Churches and a Catholic population of 152,107 in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.
