National events being held to mark Easter Rising anniversary

The parade involving members of the defence forces will go from Dublin Castle to the GPO, where the tricolour will be lowered and President Michael D Higgins will lay a wreath to remember those who died in the Rising.

The first event of the day’s ceremonies takes place at Glasnevin Cemetery at 9.30 this morning where Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, and British Ambassador Dominick Chilcott will lay wreaths at the Sigerson monument.

CEO of Glasnevin cemetery George McCullagh says it will be a solemn occasion.

Meanwhile, The North's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has said that austerity and the cuts championed by both the Irish and British Governments – represents a form of politics completely at odds with the principles of the 1916 proclamation.

Martin McGuinness said the principles underscored in the proclamation provide sound evidence that the legacy of the Easter Rising is one which puts equality, freedom and social justice above all else.

He said austerity and the cuts consensus represent a form of politics completely antagonistic to the aims of Pearse and Connolly.

Elsewhere, prayers were said at Easter Vigils around the country last night for the victims of violence, and people who are tempted to despair about the future.

The Catholic Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of all Ireland Dr Eamon Martin, called for prayers for everyone who is finding it difficult to cope with financial problems, relationship difficulties, sickness or bereavement.

Dr Martin made the comment in his homily during the Easter Vigil at St. Patricks Cathedral in Armagh.

And the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, remembered the students who died in the attack on university in Kenya, saying they were singled out to be killed – because of their Christian identity.

The Mad Hatter is holding a tea party in Dublin later.

The Easter celebration is taking place in Deerpark in Mount Merrion from 1pm.

Alice and a large White Rabbit will be among the guests for this event, which will include an Easter trail, Easter 'make and do' and more fun for all the family.
