Minister opens latest Garda recruitment campaign

600 new Gardaí will start training at the Mid Tipp campus in 2016.

Garda recruitment in Templemore recommenced in 2013 ending a five year freeze which resulted in the force falling to around 13,000.

This campaign will bring to 1,150 the number of new recruits since that moratorium was lifted.

So far 295 of these have attested as members of An Garda Síochána and are on the ground in communities nationwide.

It's expected that successful candidates from this latest recruitment drive will enter the Garda College from mid-2016.

It includes a special stream for eligible members of the Garda Reserve who are currently giving their time on a voluntary basis to support the work of full time force.

The Justice Minister has in particular urged members of minority and new communities to consider applying so that the membership of An Garda Síochána will reflect the diverse communities that it serves.

Meanwhile the Garda Commissioner says she hopes to see more women joining the force.

Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan said that when she joined the Gardaí she was one of a tiny minority of women – and welcomed the fact that a quarter of Gardai are now female.

The return of Garda recruits to the training college in recent years has provided a much needed financial boost to Templemore which had suffered considerably during the recruitment ban.

Applications must be made through www.publicjobs.ie – the closing date is Tuesday January 5th.
