McGrath asks for clarification over South Tipp future

A leaked report of the Trauma Steering Group recommends closure of 9 such units at hospitals across the country including South Tipp General.

Under the proposals the hospitals concerned would no longer treat patients who had been in traffic incidents, or had serious falls, head injuries, broken limbs or major wounds.

Instead they would be brought to what were described as larger and better-equipped emergency departments

Speaking on Tipp Today Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath said this will only lead to longer journey times and even more delays at other hospitals.

Meanwhile, daily trollywatch figures for the Clonmel health facility show there are currently 15 people waiting for a bed.

The data from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation also show that figure is double for North Tipperary patients being treated at University Hospital Limerick.

There are 30 people on trolleys and chairs there.
