Local authority urged to use the law to force owners clean up houses

New figures show that in the Thurles Templemore area alone there are over 800 applicants on the waiting list for housing.

Work is ongoing on over 60 projects in the Municipal District while the council is in the process of purchasing 9 homes and there are also 25 vacant local authority properties.

While welcoming this, local councillors insist its no substitute for new builds.

Cathaoirleach John Hogan also says that the council needs to take action to address derelict estates like Ashbury in Roscrea

While Independent Cllr Jim Ryan called for council land banks which cant be used for house building to be sold off so the money could be used to purchase homes
