Jury set to consider verdict in trial of former Tipperary secondary school teacher

Final speeches are due to be heard in the case against Henry Moloney before the judge charges the jury and sends them out to consider verdicts.

The 77 year old has denied a total of 8 charges of indecent assault alleged to have happened at the college and in an area close to the complainants’ home in 1981 and 82.

During several days of evidence last week Clonmel Circuit Court heard that the alleged abuse began at the start of the school year when the accused – who has an address at Kimmage Manor in Dublin – befriended the complainant who was a pupil at Rockwell College.

Most of the alleged incidents occurred at the school while one also took place close to the complainant's home during a visit by the teacher- however he didn't tell anybody until 2009 after being advised to do so by a councillor.

During cross examination the alleged victim was asked if he initiated civil legal proceedings 15 months before he spoke to Gardaí about the allegations – the man told the court that he went to a solicitor and asked him to contact Gardaí on his behalf.

Today both the prosecution and defence counsels will outline their closing arguments in the case before Judge Tom Teehan sums up the case and issues his charge to the jury.

They will then be sent out to consider their verdicts.
