Peter Britton from Clonmel and Waterford man Colm Ennis died when they fell 200 metres on Mont Blanc last July.
The inquest into the death of 37 year old Mr Ennis, held in Waterford yesterday, heard he and 55 year old Clonmel native Peter Britton were experienced mountaineers and always focused on safety.
Coroner John Goff said it was a very unusual inquest because Colm Ennis died in France but no investigation was carried out there.
At yesterday's hearing Mr Ennis's sister, Michelle Power, read a report from France which said the two men had slept at an altitude of 3,371m before setting off for Mont Blanc on the morning of July 27th.
The report said on the descent that afternoon, they were near a “corridor of snow” which would have brought them back easily to the refuge, but slipped and fell down 200 metres down a fast slope made of snow and rocks”.
The inquest heard that both men had died from shock due to their injuries sustained in the fall. However, the Coroner said it was quite shocking that no investigation into the cause of the fall was carried out in France.
A separate inquest was held into Peter Britton's death in South Tipp and recorded similar findings.
