Inquest finds jailed Tipp man died from overdose

An inquest into the death of a Tipperary man at Limerick Prison has concluded he died from a lethal drug overdose.

Jason Morrissey was found lying face up on his prison bed in the early hours of the 27th of December 2014.

At the Coroners court evidence was heard that in the hours before his death, the 25 year old was routinely monitored by prison officers, who described him as being asleep.

Sean Carey, a nurse officer who performed CPR on the inmate for 20 minutes said he noticed a foamy substance around the Tipp man's mouth.

Assistant State Pathologist Doctor Margaret Bolster concluded he died from a cocktail of heroin, methadone and two types of sedatives.  She said that any one of them taken on their own would not have been fatal but the cumulative effect of the drugs resulted in his death.

Counsel for the Irish Prison Service Barry Ward told the court that an Inspector of Prison's report into Jason Morrissey's death had made three recommendations and these had been implemented by the governor.

The jury returned a verdict of misadventure in accordance with the medical evidence.
