Increased efforts to tackle foul smell in Nenagh town centre.

Over the past number of years the foul stench has intermittently hit the town particularly on Kenyon, Friar and Abbey streets and in recent weeks it forced a local food business to shut up shop for the day.

The odour is being blamed on Nenagh's ancient sewerage system but council officials say progress is being made on addressing this as part of the overall upgrade of the town's gas, water and sewerage network.

Extensive exploratory works have been conducted and a site design is being prepared but local Independent Councillor Hughie McGrath says they need a definite time frame

The overall upgrade of the Gas and Water system is expected to be completed in either the first or second quarter of 2016

In the meantime Sinn Fein's Seamie Morris says temporary measures should be put in place to deal with the smell by washing out the sewers at the weekend.
