HSE acting on findings of Clonmel maternity report

The independent report was complimentary of staff at the Clonmel maternity unit.

The HSE has published reviews of maternity units at South Tipperary General Hospital and Cavan/Monaghan General Hospital – saying the findings support the current acute hospital reform programme.

The report by former NHS executive David Florry highlighted some concerns about the hospital itself saying some parts of the building were not fit for purpose.

South Tipp Independent TD and former manager at the hospital Seamus Healy says they have already raised this issue with the Minister for Health.

The Assurance Reviews found that small hospitals can't operate in isolation as stand alone entities – either clinically or financially.

Mr Florry expressed concern that there is just one senior obstetrician and 2 locum doctors in place at South Tipp General's maternity unit.

Tipperary TD Michael Lowry says swift action needs to be taken to address the issues identified in the report.

The report highlighted staff concerns about services at South Tipp General's maternity unit – something which Fine Gael Deputy Tom Hayes says he was well aware of.

Chief Operations Officer with the South and South West Hospital Group Ger O'Callaghan says they are already addressing issues that have been raised in the report.
