Health Minister vows to tackle overcrowding issues at South Tipperary General Hospital

However speaking to Tipp FM after touring the hospital Minister Simon Harris said he was committed to finding a solution.

The Minister acknowledged that the main problem is one of infrastructure rather than a lack of care from staff.

He met with a number of patients who had been on trolleys in corriders around the Emergency Department in some instances for over 40 hours.

Minister Harris also admited he was surprised at the lack of patients at Our Lady's in Cashel during his visit yesterday.

However Simon Harris paid tribute to the Primary Care work being carried out at the hospital.

Many have suggested that the Cashel hospital could be used to alleviate the overcrowding problems at South Tipp General though clinicians and hospital management say this would not be feasible.

Around €12 million spent on Our Lady's in recent years – Minister Harris feels it could and should be put to good use particularly in the area of care of the elderly and day care procedures.
