Des Hanafin was speaking as his nephew, Thurles councillor Seamus Hanafin was elected as the new Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council.
The party has already chosen one candidate – Jackie Cahill – to run in next year's General Election.
The former Senator says the calibre of the elected party members in the county bodes well for the future of the party.
