Grandparents speak on Tusla ruling over grandson

However child and family agency Tusla ruled that he should instead live with another relative in County Kerry.

The boy's grandfather says the 9 year old is not happy there and wants to return to Tipperary.

The Tipperary couple – who are in their mid-60s – had been caring for the 9 year old for the last four years.

However some months ago Tusla decided that he should instead be placed with another family member in County Kerry.

His grandparents claim it was because they were deemed to old to look after their grandson.

Speaking to Fran Curry on Tipp today his grandfather says the child isn't happy in his new home.

Their case has been taken up by Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath who says the child had been getting on well in school and socially.

He intends to raise the issue with the Minister for Children Katherine Zappone

Child and family agency Tusla had raised concerns about the yard and the house where the couple live.

His grandfather says they had taken the necessary precautions to ensure the yard was safe as well as meeting other concerns highlighted by Tusla.

For their part Tusla say they value the important role of the extended family, especially grandparents in raising a child in care.

Each case is treated individually having regard for the needs of the child.

Chief Executive Fred McBride said a decision to remove a child from a placement is only made if, after a careful consideration of all of the circumstances, it is determined that the child's needs cannot be met in the current placement.

The couple were particularly upset last weekend as their grandson was due to make his First Holy Communion.
