Gorsuch is US Supreme Court Nominee

Donald Trump says the Oxford-educated conservative has “a superb intellect” and “an unparalleled legal education”. 

The Supreme Court has the final say on issues like abortion, the death penalty and LGBT rights.

Meanwhile the Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan is in Washington to meet with a number of senior US politicians this week.

Minister Flanagan will meet the US House Speaker, Paul Ryan, House Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy and House Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi during his 3-day visit to Capitol Hill.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says the visit will also provide an opportunity for the Minister to convey the Government’s concern around recent announcements by the US Administration which impact on undocumented Irish citizens in the US and on citizens of certain designated States.

 

Elsewhere and people from seven mainly Muslim countries, temporarily blocked from entering the United States by Donald Trump, could be barred indefinitely.

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly has also warned other countries might be added to the list.

A spokesman for the president says “extreme vetting” will apply to over a thousand asylum seekers the US has agreed to resettle as part of a deal with Australia.

Our Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan meanwhile is in Washington this week – he'll discuss the impact of the immigration ban on Irish citizens with House Speaker, Paul Ryan and Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi among others.
