A video has gone viral showing the infant strapped into a car seat in the car park of the Market Green Shopping Centre in Middleton.
The Irish Examiner claims the infant was left in the car for up to 20 minutes while its parents took an older child to a shop, however the baby was left unattended for a much shorter time as one parent had stayed in the car for most of the duration.
Two windows were left open a few inches, while temperatures at the time were hitting 20 degrees.
Footage of the incident was recorded by a member of the public who posted it on social media.
Gardaí are liaising with the child and family agency Tusla.
