The crash happened at around 4:30pm when two cars collided on the N77 Kilkenny-Ballyragget Road in Jenkinstown.
The 80 year old man, the driver and sole occupant of one of the cars, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at scene.
The driver of the second car, a 59-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Waterford University Hospital where his condition is described as stable.
This morning Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to contact them at Kilkenny Garda Station.
