Funeral of Nicola Kenny to take place today

Hundreds of people are expected to gather in Thurles today to pay their last respects to a young mother who was killed in a crash earlier this week.

26 year old Nicola Kenny lost her life when a truck collided with the car in which she was a back seat passenger just a day after she had given birth to her first child.

The close-knit community of Kennedy Park in Thurles will be joined today by people from across the town and surrounding areas for the funeral of Nicola Kenny.

She had only given birth to her daughter Lily Rose last Sunday morning at South Tipp General Hospital.

The newborn was transferred from Clonmel to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin due to concerns about her health.

Nicola was travelling to Dublin to see her daughter on Monday afternoon when the tragedy happened.

She was a back seat passenger in the car which was being driven by her Aunt Irene while her mother Ann was a front seat passenger.

They had pulled into the hard shoulder of the M8 near Cashel so that Nicola could take a phone call from Temple Street which informed her that little Lily Rose was well enough to be brought back to South Tipp General.

Just after that call a truck collided with the rear of the car and Nicola was fatally injured – her aunt was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick while her mother was taken to South Tipp General.

The 26 year old will be laid to rest today in St Patrick's cemetery in Thurles after 11 o'clock Mass in the Cathedral of the Assumption.

The Kenny family have asked for privacy during today's funeral.
