Funding for Tipp services for Dementia patients

Close to 15 million euro is set to be made available to people with the illness around the country as part of grants from the Atlantic Philanthropies.

This funding will be made available in grants to improve the care and well being of people living with dementia in Ireland.

14.7 million euro, from The Atlantic Philanthropies will be matched by the HSE while an additional one million euro will come from the Department of Health.

The money will be used to improve services in three priority areas; intensive home care support, GP education and training and dementia awareness.

Welcoming the news, Tipperary Environment Minister Alan Kelly said that “it's aimed at improving the living culture of those with dementia and their families” and will allow additional research to be carried out.

There are several dementia support groups in Tipperary …including the 'five steps to living well with Dementia' project which is aimed at improving the quality of life of Tipp residents with the illness…and keep them living at home as long as possible.

There are plans to roll out the three year initiative across the region.
