Funding for Lisheen mine study approved

Efforts to establish a replacement enterprise at the site of Lisheen Mines have received a significant boost.

100 thousand euro in funding for a feasibility study has been approved by government under the REDZ scheme- which supports rural economic development.

Lisheen mines – which were in operation since 1999 and employed up to 400 people at full production – ceased production last year but efforts to find an alternative at the Moyne site have been ongoing for several years.

Director for the Thurles Templemore Municipal District Matt Short says the funding means they can now design a blueprint for future options

While accepting its a small step Independent Councillor Micheál Lowry believes its long term potential could be hugely significant for both Mid Tipp and the surrounding areas

Fianna Fail representative John Hogan – while welcoming the funding – warned against over expectations at this early stage
