Fresh evidence into the death of Michael Dwyer in Bolivia

The 24 year old died along with two other men during a police operation in April of 2009.

His family in Ballinderry have been campaigning to clear his name of any involvement in subversive activity.

At the time of his death authorities in Bolivia claimed Michael Dwyer was part of a plot to assassinate president Evo Morales.

Police said three men had been killed during a shootout – however two Brazilian men who were staying in the hotel at the time are now contradicting this.

The men – an engineer and a mechanic – were in Bolivia on a business trip and were staying in a room in the same hotel as Michael Dwyer in April of 2009.

According to a report in the Irish Times the pair say the police were in control of the hotel during the entire operation – they say an armed officer ordered them to lie on the floor of their room before the shooting started.

Marcos Brandt says he and his colleague were never interviewed by the Bolivian public prosecutor who was tasked with establishing what exactly happened on the night of the shooting.

Michael Dwyer's family have always maintained he was not involved in any subversive avticity – they claim he was summarily executed by Bolivian authorities.

They have brought their case to the UN as well as lobbying the EU parliament in Brussels.

Michael's mother and sister went to Bolivia last year to highlight the case.
