Former Tipperary based Judge comments on Niall Collins letter

A retired Tipperary District Court Judge says it wasn't wise for the Fianna Fail justice spokesperson to write a letter on behalf of a convicted drug dealer.

The man's defence team told a sentencing hearing in Limerick this week that his family circumstances placed him in the 'exceptional category' – something which his barrister said was backed up by the letter from Deputy Niall Collins.

Neither Deputy Collins nor Fianna Fail are commenting on the letter until after the man's sentencing is finalised.

Former District Court Judge Michael Pattwell says while he believes the letter was ill advised it had been done openly.
