Former Rockwell teacher found guilty of abusing student

77 year old Henry Moloney who was a choir master and music teacher at the Mid Tipperary secondary school was convicted on seven counts of indecent assault, all of which took place within 1 school year.

The jury took just over 2 hours to return unanamous verdicts in the case before Clonmel Circuit Court.

An 8th charge relating to an alleged incident near the complainent's home on Saint Stephen's day during the same year was withdrawn by Judge Tom Teehan.

During the week long trial the victim told the court that the abuse started within a week or two of the new school year at Rockwell College after Fr Henry Moloney, as he was then, asked him to join the choir.

Moloney was the choirmaster and the first incident of abuse was in the organ gallery and the injured party gave evidence that “it got worse” when the former priest asked him to go to his room in the school stating that it got ” to the point where you would call it rape, buggery”.

The former teacher showed no outward emotion as the seven guilty verdicts were read out while some rows behind the victim and his wife wept and hugged.
Moloney was remanded on bail and will be sentenced on December 15th.
