Department of Foreign Affairs trying to contact Irish caught up in Nepalese earthquake.

100 Irish people are now believed to have been caught up in the quake that has devastated the Kathmandu valley of Nepal on Saturday, killing more than 3,200 people.

Up to 17 people died yesterday following a number of aftershocks which triggered avalanches on Mount Everest.

Efforts to dig victims out from under the rubble are continuing and rescue missions are arriving in the region to help cope with the aftermath of the earthquake.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says contact is being made with many of the Irish people affected but is warning that it is taking time due to the impact on the communications network in the region.

Médecins Sans Frontières is sending medical and non-medical teams to assist victims on the ground.
