A group of TDs and Senators will try to start the process of deciding the future of water charges today.
The special Oireachtas committee has to come up with a final recommendation for the Dáil and Seanad to turn into law.
It might seem like a never-ending saga, but the debate on water charges will move slowly towards a conclusion today.
The special Oireachtas committee on water charges will hold its first meeting, as it sets about its process of making a final recommendation on water charges.
To do that, it will pull apart the report of the expert group set up under the deal between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil.
That group suggested that most households would NOT have to pay – and that only wasteful homes would face bills of some sort.
But that’s only the recommendation – and ultimately it’s up to the politicians to decide what kind of system Ireland should have.
They’ll start that work today, with the chairman of the expert group Kevin Duffy the first witness called in for questions.
