Clonmel Gardai make progress on drug dealing in problem estates.

The last meeting of the local Joint Policing Committee in the South Tipp Town also heard long awaited CCTV for Cooleens Close has been approved.

Following increased concern about drug dealing, littering and anti social behaviour by a number of individuals in several estates including the Wilderness/Carrigeen and Cooleen's Close area – the local garda presence has been stepped up.

Addressing this month's meeting of the Clonmel Joint Policing Committee – Superintendent John Courtney told councillors its resulted in a number of drug detentions – such as heroin -while knife was also confiscated from one individual.

Superintendent Courtney said that he now had a team of four plain clothes officers specifically to deal with such anti social behaviour problems in these areas and praised members of the community for coming forward with vital information.

He added they were securing convictions in the court on a daily basis but emphasised that they are dependent on information coming from citizens themselves .

The committee also heard that CCTV for Cooleen's Close has been secured but has yet to be sanctioned by the Commissioner due to a technical problem but its hoped that will be addressed in the very near future.
