Clonmel falls outside of top ten in IBAL survey

It's the first time in five years that the South Tipp town has fallen out of the top ten cleanest towns in the country.

The final litter survey of 2015 by Irish Business Against Litter shows Clonmel to be Clean to European Norms, in 23rd spot among the 40 towns surveyed.

Inspectors found that O’Connell Street and Mitchell Street were very freshly presented and maintained while some of the sites that were deemed to be moderately littered, like the train station, could be improved with 'little extra effort'.

The report found that the derelict site along Gladstone Street has been neglected over a number of years and will only continue to deteriorate if not addressed.

This is the first time since 2011 that Clonmel has finished outside the top ten.

There was a slight fall-off in the number of litter-free towns across Ireland, but no towns were deemed ‘litter blackspots’ and only one was ‘seriously littered’.

The winning town for 2015 will be announced at a ceremony in Dublin later today.
