Candidates line up for top Ceann Comhairle role

Traditionally it has been the Taoiseach's responsibility to appoint the Chair – but for the first time ever the job will be filled through a secret ballot.

Nominations close at 6pm this evening – there are five names in the running so far for tomorrow's vote.

Known for being softly spoken, Deputy O'Sullivan says she's strong enough to be the first female Ceann Comhairle.

“I wouldn't let my name go forward unless I thought I was (up for it) – but time will tell” she said.

“I've been getting texts from various past pupils from over my 36 years teaching, who feel that I would be well up for it”.

“My constituency work will not be neglected – there maybe a need that I have to do it in a different kind of way”.

“But if we were to follow that to its logical conclusion, then nobody would be a minister either, because we are all still representing constituencies” she added.
