Over 250,000 expected at Ploughing Championships

Large numbers of Tipperary people will be making their way to the National Ploughing Championships which get underway today.

Organisers are hoping to top last years record attendance of 283,000 people at Screggan near Tullamore.

€36.5 million was spent over the three days of the event last year on machinery, food, animals and just general shopping.

There is a large traffic management plan in place – as Inspector John Lawless from Tullamore Garda station explains.

President Michael D Higgins will be on hand to launch the championships later.

He’ll join the 300 competitors, 1700 exhibitors and almost 300,000 visitors at the highlight of the farming year.

If you’re coming the weather forecast is mixed so pack accordingly, check the management plan on the garda website, and don’t forget the wellies.
