€1.2 million recovered in Tipp welfare fraud

Figures released by the Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar show that Tipperary is one of only two counties, without a city, to claw back over a million euro in suspected fraud payments.

These figures were released by Minister Varadkar following a question from Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath.

The numbers show that the State recovered the most money from Job Seekers Allowance, but suspected payments were also made in entitlements concerning dead and blind people.

In total, €48.9 million in fraudulent over-payments were made during 2015…this compares with over 52 million in 2014 and almost 62 million the year before…

Minister Varadkar said the State got back 26.7 million euro last year.

In Tipperary, 1.2 million euro was recovered by the State, one of just two counties in the country without a city to recover over a million euro is fraud payments … the other county, Kildare, claimed back one million.

Dublin accounted for the largest recovery…€7.75 million, or 33% of the overall total for the year.
