Earthquakes strike Japan and New Zealand

Two powerful earthquakes have struck New Zealand and Japan overnight.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6-point-3 has struck central New Zealand.

Meanwhile, a tsunami measuring up to one metre has hit the coast of Japan following a 7-point-3 tremor not far from Fukushima.

In 2011 a powerful tsunami there killed thousands and caused a nuclear accident at a power station.

Japanese TV channels like NHK have been urging those along the east coast to evacuate.
