Death toll rising after Italy earthquake

A state of emergency has been declared for areas worst affected by a devastating earthquake in Italy.

The Italian government has pledged 50-million-euro to the rescue effort and announced a new initiative to address criticism over shoddy construction.

Hope of finding survivors is fading after another earthquake hit the region.

The latest tremor which shook the area this morning hit 4.7 on the Richter scale.

267 people are now known to have died after Wednesday's disaster, with a further 400 in hospital.
