Young swimmer drowns in Carrick river

A post-mortem is due to be carried out on the body of a man who drowned in the River Suir.

The tragic incident happened yesterday evening in a popular swimming spot in Carrick on Suir

The alarm was raised at 16.49 when the man in his 20’s got into difficulty in the river near the centre of Carrick on Suir.

He was swimming close to Ormonde Castle at the back of Manor Court in the town when its believed he got stuck in a whirlpool and others were unable to reach him

Emergency services including the Coastguard Helicopter 117, Carrick River Rescue, local civil defence and units of the fire bridge from Clonmel and Carrick were at the scene within minutes.

Then just after 6 pm a body was spotted in the water and was recovered a short time later –

The remains of the young man- who lived in the South Tipp Town but was originally from Thurles were taken to Waterford University Hospital where a post-mortem is due to be carried out later today.
