Bausch and Lomb staff to meet this evening

Workers at Waterford plant Bausch and Lomb will meet this evening to be briefed on the next step following the breakdown of talks aimed at saving jobs at the company.

The firm is seeking 200 voluntary redundancies, with remaining workers facing a 20 percent pay cut.

Two weeks ago today, the 11 hundred staff at the Bausch and Lomb plant in Waterford city were told that the company was seeking 200 job cuts and a 20% pay cut for the remaining 900 staff.

The contact lens manufacturer, which has been in Waterford for over 30 years, told workers that unless the savings can be reached, the future of the plant is at risk of shutting down altogether.

The company said that staff had until the 17th June to accept or reject the proposals

Discussions began last week between SIPTU and management at the Labour Relations Commission….however they have ended without agreement.

SIPTU issued a statement this afternoon saying “It was not possible for the Labour Relations Commission to present an agreed set of proposals to union representatives.”

The LRC will now provide unions with the written final position of Bausch and Lomb.

A general meeting for all SIPTU members in the Waterford Plant will be held at 7pm this evening.
