New lease of life for Lisheen Mine

There’s a new lease of life for Lisheen Mine in mid-Tipperary.

The site is one of the main beneficiaries of funding from the Regional Enterprise Development Fund.

Today’s news is a major boost for Mid-Tipperary – it will see a major investment in the Lisheen Mine site located between the villages of Moyne and Templetuohy in Mid-Tipperary.

4.5 million Euro has been allocated for the project under the Regional Enterprise Development Fund.

This fund is aimed at supporting major new collaborative and innovative initiatives that can make a significant impact on enterprise development across regions or nationally.

It’s a key action to support the Regional Action Plan for Jobs and the Action Plan for Rural Development.

The lead and zinc mine at Lisheen employed up to 400 people at its peak – the operation wound down in 2015 with the last shipment made in January of last year.

The money will be spent on the development of a state-of-the-art National Bioeconomy Innovation & Piloting Facility.

This will encompass flexible, modular, pilot-scale multi-purpose chemical & biological infrastructure.

It’s one of 21 successful applicants representing all regions of the country which have secured funding in the first competitive call.

In all over €14 million Euro has been approved for projects in the southern region, more than 11 million for projects in the eastern and midlands region while over 5 million has been approved for the northern and western region.
