Zika virus confirmed in Ireland

It says the two patients are both adults, with a history of travel to Zika-affected countries.

It's also claimed they're now fully recovered and neither could be pregnant.

The mosquito-borne infection, which isn't harmful in most cases, but has been linked to birth defects, so pregnant women are deemed higher risk.

The disease has been spreading quickly through Latin America – and Fianna Fáil's health spokesperson Billy Kelleher wants the Minister for Health to set up an information campaign here:

Meanwhile, a case of the Zika virus being transmitted through sex, rather than a mosquito bite, has been reported in Dallas.

Health officials believe it's the first case of the illness being caught within the US.

The patient hadn't travelled to any infected area but their partner had been to Venezuela.
