Two people rescued from the Knockmealdown Mountains

Rescuers described the operation near Clogheen as one of the most difficult they had experienced.

The couple in their 50's – who are both experienced hill walkers – had become trapped in a very dense rhododendron forest on the Knockmealdowns on the Tipperary – Waterford border near the Vee..

After a 5 hour operation they were helped off a treacherous area of steep ground overlooking Bay Lough by evening time.

Spotters from the South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association, who were able to make visual contact with the two, guided rescuers to their location by radio.

Cahir River Rescue then stepped in to transport the two across Bay Lough to safety while Cahir Gardai were also involved in the operation.
