The Government has confirmed backing for the much talked about Shannon crossing at Ballina – Killaloe.

The Capital Plan Review also includes the upgrade of the Ballina – Birdhill Regional Road and the Killaloe bypass.

The inclusion of a new bridge over the Shannon in the review by Transport Minister Shane Ross will come as welcome news to locals and tourists alike in North Tipperary, Clare and Limerick.

The multi-million Euro project is aimed at easing the chronic congestion which has been experienced in the twin towns of Ballina and Killaloe over the years.

Legal challenges to the project were overcome late in 2016.

An additional €486 million has been secured for roads for the period 2018 to 2021, bringing total roads investment for this time to €4.26 billion.

The inclusion of a crossing of the Shannon below the Ballina – Killaloe Bridge together with the other upgrades should see work being carried out on a phased basis over the coming years.
