Tipperary’s dole queue figures rose sharply in May.

It comes just over a week after Intellicom in Clonmel closed its doors, however it’s understood that alternative employment was found for the majority of the 150 staff members.

Following a two month dip – Tipperary's overall unemployment numbers are now back up at February's figures with just over 14 thousand people signing on in May – up 383 on April.

South Tipp experienced the biggest jump – returning to January levels with Clonmel the worst affected area – there are over 2,562 people seeking some form of employment aid – nearly a thousand more than the second hardest hit area of Carrick on Suir, followed closely by Tipp Town then Cashel and Cahir.

Then in North Tipperary almost 6,200 people were on the dole queue last month with the majority of those – or over 5,000 – divided almost evenly between Nenagh and Thurles – Roscrea's figure stands at just over 1,100.

The figures come just a week after the final wind down of Intellicom in Clonmel – the call centre which employed up to 150 people has been phasing out operations at the Carrigeen Business Park since February after losing their UPC contract when it moved all call centre operations to the Philippines.

Efforts to secure alternative contracts were unsuccessful however its understood that CPL recruitment were able to find employment for the majority of staff.
