Tipperary was among the counties that voted to abolish the Seanad.
However it was a close call for Government.
From the outset it was neck and neck in the tallies as boxes from the North and South Tipperary constituencies were opened in Nenagh and Clonmel today.
However just before lunchtime it became clear that the “yes” side to abolish the Seanad had won it by a nose in the South of the county with less than 200 votes in it.
With a turnout of 41.7 percent – the Referendum was carried by 50.4 percent to 49.6 percent against.
It was a very similar story in Nenagh with just 200 votes between it there- Final result 50.38% percent -yes and 49.62% No with a 42.8 percent turnout.
However Minister of State and Tipperary TD Tom Hayes believes that given the level of opposition the government faced on the issue – he see its a huge Fine Gael victory in the county.
