Tipperary roads set for upgrades

Several projects have gotten the go ahead for 2014 as part of the roads allocation for Tipperary's councils.

17 million euro has been allocated to the county's roads for the year, the money will be used mainly for the restoration and maintenance of regional and local roads.

Funding of over 17 million euro for Tipperary roads was announced last month, to be divided across the county.

In the Fethard area, Mullinahone's main street has been earmarked for major improvements worth over 300 thousand euro.

The full restoration and footpath project on Kickham Street is due to get underway by the end of next month.

Water improvement works have caused significant damage to the roads around the village…these repairs are currently being carried out.

Local councillor Eddie O' Meara says those works are a separate project but this latest announcement has been a long time coming.

As part of Clonmel's budget, special projects will received over 600 thousand euro…Kilsheelan and Clerihan villages are set to get 140 thousand euro each for a village enhancement scheme.

Clonmel Fine Gael Councillor Michael Murphy says the allocation for the area surrounding the town is very welcome.

In the north of the county, Templemore's budget for roads includes works in Drom village and Barnane.

Local Independent Councillor Eddie Moran says these projects have been in the pipeline for a number of years.

The funding will also see a number of low cost safety improvement schemes across Tipperary with roads in Killenaule, Cappawhite, Clonmel, Ballyporeen, Knockavilla and Nenagh earmarked for works.

Block maintenance grants have also been allocated to the county's town councils…Thurles, Tipperary, Cashel, Carrick-on-Suir, Clonmel borough, Templemore and Nenagh.
