Tipp Special Olympians want to continue success

Templemore's Rachel Ryan and Clonmel's Kelly Delaney both picked up top accolades at the world event in LA recently and arrived home to a hero's welcome.

They spoke with Fran Curry on Tipp Today this morning.

Rachel Ryan took Gold for Ireland in the 400 metres race on the first day of the track and field events and says she got used to the celebrity that it attracted quite quickly.

It was the Templemore athlete's first time competing at this distance and along with claiming top honours she also posted a personal best time in the race and then went on to take Silver with her teammates in the relay event..

Her fellow athlete from Clonmel Kelly Delaney was also among the medallists – She won a silver in the mixed doubles and a bronze in the doubles in badminton as well as a 4th place ribbon.

Following the games the pair arrived home to a hero's welcome which Kelly really enjoyed

The pair said they really enjoyed their time in Los Angeles and weren't fazed by the heat or the magnitude of the event they were taking part in.

Both athletes say they hope to compete in further games and win more medals for Ireland – Rachel is already back in training while Kelly returns to the badminton courts in December.

Rachel's father William – who expressed huge pride in both of the Tipperary athletes, says events like the games also highlight the extraordinary abilities of those with special needs.
