Tipp man among three bankers sentenced

The 66 year old with an address of Greenrath, Tipperary town was one of three former bank executives sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court this morning.

Judge Martin Nolan told the sentencing hearing today that the three men had failed to act with honesty and integrity by manufacturing 7.2 billion euro in deposits to make Anglo's books look healthier than they actually were.

The deals were done in September 2008…the three men were found guilty following an 89 day trial earlier this year.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that 66 year old Willie McAteer, of Greenrath, Tipperary town had authorised the transactions when he knew what he was doing was 'underhand, deceitful and corrupt'.

Judge Nolan said the Tipperary man was a respected leader of huge experience whose actions in 2008 were reprehensible.

He sentenced him to three and a half years in jail.

52 year old John Bowe from Glasnevin in Dublin and 56 year old Denis Casey from Raheny in Dublin were both sentenced to two years for their role in the scheme.

Judge Nolan said the conspiracy potentially affected thousands of people and that if the public cannot rely on probity of blue chip companies and bands, we lose all trust in them.
