Tipp man appears in court in relation to motor tax scam

A Tipperary man has pleaded guilty to his part in a motor tax scam.

Eleven motorists have already appeared before the courts for their role in the operation.

Jeff Arthurs of Mohera House, Annacarty, Dundrum pleaded guilty at Ennis Circuit Court to eight separate charges of himself or someone on his behalf handing in falsified documentation to the motor tax office at Clare County Council on dates in 2013 and 2014.

This resulted in the Council charging a fraction of what the motor tax should have been due to the papers showing that the size of the engine of the cars in question had been reduced.

Already, in the District Court a wedding singer, an accountant and a Syrian refugee were just three of 11 motorists of mainly high powered cars who pleaded guilty for their role in the scam.

In the District Court, Judge Patrick Durcan banned nine of the 11 motorists from driving for one year. However, the driving bans were overturned on appeal to the Circuit Court.

Some of the cars involved in the cases included a BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover and Nissan Xtrail.

Judge Gerald Keys adjourned the case to March 7th for sentence at Ennis Circuit Court and remanded Jeff Arthurs on bail to that date.
