Thurles Councillor takes over as Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council.

Councillor Hanafin was proposed by party colleague Jackie Cahill and seconded by Roger Kennedy.

Seamus Hanafin described it as a very proud day for both him and his family- his wife and three children were present today along with his mother Peg and his uncle – former Senator Des Hanafin who was chair of North Tipp County Council almost 60 years ago along with his wife Mona.

He also spoke of his late father and his aunt Binkie who also served in the council.

Councillor Hanafin has a comprehensive plan of action saying employment is the single biggest issue that we must tackle and it's something that he will address during his time in the role.

He also expressed his disappointment that a recent IDA visit was cancelled but it will be something that will form a key part of his tenure

His fellow councillors then wished him well stating he has a tough year ahead given the size of the local authority and the fact a general election is round the corner but saying he will bring great qualities to the role.

Fine Gael’s John Fahey was also the only name put forward for the position of Leas Cathaoirleach – was nominated by Mary Hanna Hourigan and seconded by Ger Darcy.

There were widespread tributes to the outgoing Chair Michael Fitzgerald with spokespersons from the various groupings speaking about his time in office

He was described as fair – particularly with the tough task of taking over a newly amalgamated council when there were a lot of rows in the beginning

CEO Joe McGrath said Michael Fitzgerald’s name will go down in history as the first Cathaoirleach of the combined Tipperary County Council and thanked him for his unfailing commitment.
