Templemore recruits passing out today

It comes as pressure mounts on the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald to increase Garda numbers in rural areas that have come under attack from thieves.

Several Tipperary communities have been targeted with repeated robberies, particularly farm yards.

This morning's ceremony in Templemore marks the completion of the first part of the Garda recruits' training

The 100 students will now take up positions in stations across the country to gain practical experience of what they learned in the Garda College.

The Garda Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan, Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald and Tánaiste Joan Burton will attend today's ceremony.

Minister Fitzgerald is coming under increasing pressure to pump more resources into rural policing as the rate of robberies during the first six months of this year increased dramatically.

The most recent CSO figures show that there were 420 crimes a month reported on farms throughout the country in the first half of 2014.

A number of communities in Tipperary, including Littleton and Athnid have come together to try to battle back against repeated break-ins in the area.

The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors wants the Minister to prioritise Garda resources in this year's budget in response to the increase in rural crime.

The organisation is looking for a legitimate policing authority in order to provide a more robust service.
