There’s been a broad welcome from youth groups on the Government’s decision to set the so-called ‘digital age of consent’ at 13.
The cabinet came to an agreement on the age, which allows teenagers to sign up to social media profiles without needing permission from parents.
Executive Director for SpunOut.ie Ian Power believes it’s the right decision saying it makes no sense trying to police the age of users online when they know verifying ages and confirming parental consent would be virtually impossible to enforce.
He feels it would be better to start looking at responses that will actually make young people safer online.
